When you think of music in Texas, it’s easy to think of Austin. Rightfully so, but Houston, Texas, is also a city full of fantastic music. Houston is famous for its mix of sounds and big-name artists who started their careers here. From hip-hop to country, rock to pop, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Let me tell you about some of Houston’s biggest music stars and popular music venues.

Artists from Houston

Houston has given the world some of the biggest names in music. Here are a few stars who proudly represent the city:

Bun B: Bun B is a legend in Houston’s hip-hop scene. He was a part of the group U.G.K (Underground Kingz) and helped make southern hip-hop popular across the country. Bun B’s music often talks about life in Houston, and he’s respected for staying true to his roots.

Beyonce: Beyonce was born and raised in Houston and has become one of the most famous musicians in the world. She started out in the group “Destiny’s Child” before going solo and making hits like “Crazy in Love” and “Single Ladies.” She often gives a shoutout to Houston in her music and always sells out the 70,000+ seat NRG stadium (near Camden Vanderbilt) when she comes to town.

Khruangbin: A personal favorite of mine is Khruangbin. This unique band from Houston mixes different genres like funk, soul, and psychedelic music. Khruangbin’s sound is often inspired by music from around the world, but their Texas roots come through too. This band’s dreamy instrumental songs have made them popular not only in Houston but all over the world. These are just a few examples, but many other artists from Houston, from Lizzo to Travis Scott, are making waves in music.

Music Venues in Houston

Houston has plenty of places to enjoy live music. Here are a few popular venues you should check out:

• Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo: Houston has a rich country music scene that’s loved by locals and visitors alike. Country music is a big part of Texas culture. The Houston Rodeo, one of the biggest annual events in the city, has a huge concert series where many famous country, pop and Latin artists perform. This doesn’t even include all the honky-tonk bars and dance halls, such as Whisky River, located near Camden Northpointe.

• House of Blues: Located Downtown and within walking distance from our Camden Downtown high-rise, this venue hosts many kinds of music. You can hear rock, hip-hop, country, and more. It’s also a great place to see famous musicians as well as new musicians.

• White Oak Music Hall: This is a favorite for fans of indie and alternative music. White Oak has both indoor and outdoor stages, so it's great for concerts in any season. Plus, how can you beat being a short Uber ride away from our Camden Heights and Camden City Centre communities? Many popular touring bands play here and it has a great view of the Houston skyline!

• Warehouse Live: This venue is literally across the street from Camden Travis Street and Camden McGowen Station. Another top spot for concerts, Warehouse Live, is known for hosting big names and up-and-coming artists. It’s a popular place for hip-hop shows and has a great vibe for fans who want to get close to the action.

• The Heights Theater: This historic theater hosts many country, folk, and blues acts. As a huge blues fan, I would describe The Heights Theatre as having a cozy, old-time feel, making it a perfect place to enjoy a more relaxed show.

• Miller Outdoor Theatre: If you like free concerts, this is the place for you. Located in beautiful Herman Park just minutes away from Camden Vanderbilt, Miller Outdoor Theatre offers a range of shows, from classical to jazz in an outdoor setting. Be sure to bring a blanket so you can enjoy live music under the Texas stars.

This is just a small sample of the many places to enjoy live music in town!

Why Houston Has a Special Music Scene

Houston’s music scene is one of a kind because it mixes so many styles. You’ll see influences from southern rap to Tejano music, country, indie rock and psychedelic music. The city is also known for the “Chopped and Screwed” style of hip-hop, a slower style made famous by the late DJ Screw, a Houston legend.

Houston’s artists often sing about real-life experiences in their city giving their music a unique feel. With so many different venues, you can find a concert that fits your mood any night of the week!

Whether you’re a fan of Beyonce, are a hip-hop fan with Bun-B, or someone who loves the unique sounds of Khruangbin, Houston has something for everyone. With its rich history in music and amazing venues, Houston is a city worth living in for music fans!
