As hot as it may be, people love going out in the summer! The sun stays up longer, ice cream is sweeter, and everything is greener! As fun and unique as the fall and winter activities are, there are an abundance of summer events to do with your friends and family that make it all the better.
No matter where you live, there are annual events you’ll look forward to all year long. But in between those events, you need something to do to pass the time. So I’ve compiled a list of some of the best summer activities in Raleigh and Durham that you can do pretty much any time in the Triangle during the summer.

Cheer on the Durham Bulls
Let’s start with a local favorite; the Durham Bulls are one of the most well-known and successful Triple-A baseball teams in the country. We’re lucky to have them right here in the Triangle, just two blocks from Camden Durham! If you’ve never been, it feels like a big party! The stadium they play at, Durham Bulls Athletic Park, is situated in the American Tobacco district of downtown Durham. It’s a great place to go with your friends to hang out, have a hot dog, and feel American.
Visit Sunflower Field
The Sunflower Field, located in Dorothea Dix Park, not far from the upcoming Camden Village District, is my favorite summer tradition in the Triangle! It opens in July and lasts for several weeks until the flowers wither. I love it because it gives you a serene feel in the center of the city. It’s a picturesque spot you won’t want to miss out on! If you want something extra to do when you go there, bring your friends, a Frisbee, and a few cans of Cheerwine, and you’ll be certain to have a great evening!
Attend the Midtown Beach Music Series
The Midtown Beach Music Series lasts from April through June every year. It happens every Thursday in North Hills, near Camden Overlook and Camden Manor Park. You can listen to live music in a fun atmosphere with your friends! Make sure to bring a chair if you plan to sit, eat some food, and enjoy the music.
Catch a NC Courage Game
Sports are a huge deal in the Triangle, particularly college sports, but we have two major league teams here, the Carolina Hurricanes and the North Carolina Courage. Everybody in the Triangle knows the Hurricanes but even many people that have lived here for years don’t know the Courage. They’re part of the National Women’s Soccer League. The games are fun, inexpensive, and a great place to go with your friends and family! There is also a minor league men’s team called North Carolina Football Club that is fun to go to. Both teams play at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, halfway between Camden Asbury Village and Camden Westwood.
Go Strawberry Picking
For some good family fun or a cute date idea, go strawberry picking! There are plenty of strawberry fields across the Triangle and surrounding area, such as Porter Farms, Pope’s Strawberry Farm, and DJ’s Berry Patch, which is in Apex near Camden Reunion Park and Camden Lake Pine! Strawberries are the perfect summer fruit, and they taste so much sweeter when you pick them yourself!

Take a Dip in Your Camden Community Pool
If you don’t want to go far, go to your Camden community pool! No matter what Camden you’re at, you’re going to have a gorgeous, well-maintained community pool that you can enjoy all summer long! Make sure you get there a little early to get a prime spot on a sunny summer day to enjoy an exciting atmosphere provided for you just a few minutes walk away from your front door!
Get outside and enjoy the summer! Turn some of these into traditions that you look forward to every year.
If you’re looking for other things to do when your family takes a summer trip to see you, I’ve got a few ideas for you in a recent blog post Tourist Attractions in Raleigh and Durham!
